Adaptable AI
Pindo’s language-based customer service AI
At The Engine Room, we are particularly interested in finding AI systems that adapt to different cultures and communication styles – this is particularly the case when looking into AI systems in the African continent, especially given Africa’s multilingual and diverse cultural landscape in which over 2.000 languages are spoken.

One company that we found quite interesting is Pindo, a company focused on customer service. The company developed a voice and text recognition AI tool that accommodates local languages, including Kinyarwanda, Swahili and Luganda.
Although geared more to corporate and government sectors than to civil society or social justice users, this tool demonstrates that AI, when tailored to local languages, can significantly increase accessibility, especially in a multilingual region.
AI solutions like this have the potential to bring marginalized populations closer to essential services, including those provided by public services, whether implemented by governments or the private sector.
