What lies ahead?

Reflections on existing work and room for hope

Our research highlights that, while there is still much to be done, African researchers and developers are making significant strides towards creating AI systems that are adaptable, socially responsible, and community centered.

Most of the AI applications we identified only partially meet the aspirational goals of being sustainable, culturally adaptive, and focused on social justice. However, these projects do demonstrate that it is possible to find creative ways to address pressing social justice issues, including those related to environmental conservation, healthcare accessibility, language justice, and social inequality.

The examples provided also serve as a reminder that AI in Africa is not only a matter of building systems that match Minority World applications.

African AI, in its various forms and tools, needs to reflect a reimagining of technology – one in which social well-being and transformation are placed at the forefront.

As AI continues to impact our changing world, we remain hopeful that values of inclusivity, justice, and sustainability will guide future AI innovations, both in the African context and throughout the larger world.
