Alternative tech tools for knowledge sharing
Showcasing some alternative tools for the dissemination of information and essential communication
Near the end of 2023, The Engine Room conducted research into how organisations and communities have been using alternative tech tools for knowledge sharing.
We were particularly interested in 'low-resource' tools for knowledge sharing - for example, low-resource software and websites, tools for offline knowledge exchange, and mesh & community networks.
We hoped to better understand how alternative tools can enable and facilitate community participation and connection, especially in areas that historically have lower connectivity.
Our research surfaced creative interventions that circumvent traditional, Big Tech solutions to promote knowledge sharing primarily among rural and marginalised groups.
The tools we highlight below have been used in resource constrained environments in a variety of locations, including Brazil, Ecuador, Peru, Dominican Republic, Mexico, Uganda and India.
They provide a model for adopting more sustainable and lower-tech solutions that are adaptable in a variety of contexts.
