Video calls
Tips on making your video calls more inclusive
Before the call
Ask about accessibility considerations and share resources beforehand if possible (especially slide decks or other written materials)
Test your mic and audio
During the call
Use closed captioning (Zoom is typically more accurate than Teams)
Identify yourself: People who are visually impaired cannot always recognize voices and automatic screen captions are not always accurate. This helps people familiarize themselves with each speaker.
Describe the slide and images
Summarize what’s in the chat and when possible using a combination of chat and verbal Q&As. Screen readers cannot always read chats so this provides more options for engagement.
If possible, use closed captioning, provide transcripts and recordings, provide sign language and interpretation in other relevant languages.
Practice flexibility! Especially in regards to personal preferences for having video and audio on or off.
